Rominger Untouchable
SPECIAL NOTE: the 1995 Giro d'Italia start list did not include talented Italian climber Marco Pantani (suffering from a training injury earlier in the year) or former Giro champion Miguel Indurain, who needed rest before the Tour de France.
Italian superstar sprinter Mario Cipollini took the Maglia Rosa on stage 1 in Terni. His race lead was short when Switzerland’s Tony Rominger took full control of the race on the stage 2 19 km individual time trial. Once in the Maglia Rosa he never looked back. Gewiss-Ballan teammates, Evgeni Berzin and Piotr Ugrumov, never mounted a serious challenge to Rominger and spent most of the Giro attacking each other.
SPECIAL NOTE: the Giro was presented with cold temperatures, rain and snow. The original stage 19 from Mondovì to Briançon (Fra) had to be rescheduled due to an avalanche on the Agnello Pass. The riders were forced to finish the stage in Chianale di Ponte Chianale where the day’s ‘Intergiro sprint’ was scheduled. It would serve as an emergency finish to the stage after only 129.9 km (81 mi) of racing.
Tony Rominger rode into Milan for a very dominating Giro d’Italia victory. Evgeni Berzin (Rus) and Piotr Ugrumov (Let) finished second and third respectively.
SPECIAL NOTE: Rominger’s Giro victory was the third for Switzerland following Hugo Koblet in 1950 and Carlo Clerici in 1954.
